Hit-and-run on I-5 sets off chain-reaction crash that killed 72-year-old grandmother

Family says victim survived initial crash and called for help before being struck and killed minutes later.

SEATAC, Wash. — What began as a routine Sunday morning paper route ended in tragedy for a 72-year-old grandmother on Interstate 5 near SeaTac.

Nadezhda Gorbachenko of Kent was driving her silver Prius in the southbound lanes near Exit 149 when she was hit by another vehicle, believed to be a 2009 to 2017 Mercedes E-Class sedan with two doors, according to the Washington State Patrol. The crash disabled Gorbachenko’s vehicle.

Detectives believe the driver suspected of causing the crash briefly remained on scene before driving away.
