OLYMPIA, Wash. — A bill creating new standards for who can be a sheriff or police chief in Washington state is heading to Gov. Bob Ferguson’s desk.
The Senate passed an amended version of SB 5874 Monday, after the House passed the same version last week. All Republicans voted against the bill in both chambers.
The bill requires a background investigation, five years of experience in law enforcement, and a minimum age of 25 for any new sheriffs or police chiefs.
