‘Ulcer gulch’ grows as legislative deadline looms in Olympia

Policy bills face a 5 p.m. deadline on March 6.

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Dozens of bills face elimination from Washington state’s current legislative session if lawmakers fail to act by 5 p.m. Friday, sending advocates, lobbyists, and legislators into a stressful push to advance their priorities before time runs out.

The final days of the legislative session attract lobbyists waiting outside the doors of the House or Senate, hoping to get good news from legislators. 

Veteran lobbyist Paul Benz, who has worked the Capitol in Olympia for 25 years, noted the annual tension.
