LYNNWOOD, Wash. — For most families, a high school diploma is the key to unlocking your future. But for Makena Simonsen, an Edmonds School District graduate with special needs, hers did just the opposite.
As a student with special needs, Makena’s graduation day was filled with promise.
“I was happy. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I finally made it!'” she said.
Four years later, though, she feels it was all a time of broken promises.
