Anacortes mom raises $800K for Ukraine as war enters its fifth year

Four years into the Russia-Ukraine war, one Anacortes woman is fighting back with fundraising, humanitarian trips and a classroom full of pen pals.

ANACORTES, Wash. — Four years into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, an Anacortes mother is doing everything she can to make sure the war doesn’t fade from memory — or from conscience.

Marketa Vorel founded the Sunflower Fund after the invasion began in February 2022. Since then, she has raised more than $800,000 that goes directly to the Ukrainian people in the form of funding for a women and children’s clinic, war crime investigations and military aid.
