Got a soft spot for old bridges? Snohomish County has a deal for you

Snohomish County is offering a historic bridge for free before replacing it in 2029. The 340-foot span must be preserved rather than demolished.

GRANITE FALLS, Wash. — Free to a good home: one aging beauty, still in good shape, loves the outdoors and long walks along the river.

That’s essentially the pitch Snohomish County is making for Granite Falls Bridge 102, a 92-year-old span that has outlived its usefulness, but the law states it is too historically significant to simply tear down.

When Fred Cruger looks out at the old bridge crossing the Stillaguamish River, he doesn’t just see steel and concrete.
