Floodwaters threaten the Hmong flower farmers who help define Pike Place Market

Historic flooding submerged dozens of Hmong family farms in Snohomish County, threatening spring income, generational businesses and the future of some flower farms.

SEATTLE — The tulips at Pike Place Market stand upright in their buckets, vivid against a slate-colored sky. Tourists pause for photos. Vendors call out prices.

Two months earlier, many of those flowers were underwater.

In December 2025, historic flooding submerged dozens of small farms across Snohomish County. Many are owned by Hmong families who came to the United States after the Vietnam War and now supply nearly half of the flower vendors at Pike Place Market.
