Lawmakers target ‘gas station heroin’ as kratom addiction cases surge

State lawmakers are considering a ban on synthetic kratom after reports of addiction and deaths.

MOUNT VERNON, Wash — A completely legal drug that acts similarly to opiates is drawing the attention of state lawmakers after reports of addiction, overdoses and deaths.

Senate Bill 6287, working its way through the Washington state Legislature, would ban the sale of kratom in its synthesized form and restrict purchase of the plant form to those 21 and older.

A Skagit County father of two, who KING 5 is identifying as “Tim,” is fighting an addiction to a drug he never thought would do him harm.
