SEATTLE — Irvin Garcia was busy finishing medical school when a late-night phone call changed everything.
In October around Garcia’s birthday, his mother called to say his father had fallen and could not move the left side of his body. Garcia, who is training in emergency medicine, immediately feared the worst. Doctors soon confirmed his suspicion: his father had suffered a hemorrhagic stroke, a dangerous brain bleed that can be fatal or permanently disabling.
