Historic Varsity Theater in Seattle’s University District to close after 8 decades

The theater first opened in 1940, but dwindling crowds due to an evolving film industry have torn into profits.

SEATTLE — The historic Varsity Theater will permanently close on Thursday, ending an 86-year run in Seattle’s University District. 

The company that runs the theater, Far Away Entertainment, announced the decision on Wednesday. 

“I walk into theaters now and sometimes there’s just one or two people in the theater and it breaks my heart,” said Janet Mulka, the company’s operations manager.

Mulka cited a variety of factors, including the constantly evolving film industry, which prioritizes streaming platforms over traditional theatrical releases.
