A tornado warning was issued for central Santa Cruz County shortly after noon Thursday, after meteorologists detected rotation within a severe thunderstorm.
The National Weather Service (NWS) said the storm was about seven miles south of Santa Cruz at 12:19 p.m. PST and moving north at roughly 35 mph.
Communities listed in the warning included Santa Cruz, Capitola, Scotts Valley, Soquel, Live Oak, Twin Lakes, Aptos, Felton, Ben Lomond, Boulder Creek, and surrounding valleys. The NWS warning indicated the primary hazard was a tornado, with impacts that can include dangerous flying debris and damage to roofs, windows, vehicles, and trees.
