The old adage is that the NBA season doesn’t really start until Christmas. While it’s a handy framework for not overreacting to everything you see early in the season, it also clashes with the idea that the end of the regular season also isn’t very important as most teams position themselves to tank for draft position or rest starters ahead of the playoffs. The NBA regular season is an eternal 82 games, and the only ones that matter are between Christmas and the All-Star break? It’s almost like the league desperately needs to shorten the season.
