A new Ipsos poll released has intensified a long-brewing debate over the September 11th Security Fee, the mandatory federal charge added to nearly every airline ticket in the United States. The poll shows that a clear majority of Americans believe the fee should be used exclusively for aviation security, not diverted into other government spending—as it routinely is.
The 9/11 Security Fee currently adds $5.60 per one-way airline trip to help fund the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). But most travelers are unaware that Congress has, for years, redirected a substantial portion of that revenue to the federal budget for deficit reduction rather than airport security improvements.
