UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — Firefighters are investigating what caused a house fire Thursday afternoon that killed 13 pets in University Place.
The blaze broke out just after noon at a home on Menlo Drive West, according to West Pierce Fire & Rescue. By the time crews arrived, seven dogs and six cats had died from smoke inhalation.
“None of them could be resuscitated. The smoke was too thick,” homeowner Derek Smith said through tears.
