This year was supposed to cement the great box office reset. Instead, 2025 has fallen far short of that promise. Winter was bleak, and although spring surged and summer was decent, the fall season has been tragic. With an inconsistent supply of hits, waning interest in once-reliable franchises and stars losing their sizzle, it’s been a volatile 11 months for movie theaters.
“Hot or cold; on or off; feast or famine,” says analyst David A. Gross of movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research. “That’s how it’s been for most of the year.”
