Rumors of Mount Rainier earthquakes are actually ice buildup on one monitoring station, officials say

Rime ice buildup on Mount Rainier’s only analog seismic station has led to false reports of increased tremor activity, the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network said.

SEATTLE — Ice buildup on an antenna at Mount Rainier has led to false reports of increased tremor activity, according to the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN).

The signal is actually radio interference caused by rime ice buildup on a seismic station antenna. PNSN said that station, referred to as STAR, is the last analog site on the mountain.

Rime ice is a white or milky and opaque coating that forms when supercooled water droplets freeze onto objects, according
