Boom in scooter use creates sidewalk strain; SDOT creates new parking corrals

According to Seattle Department of Transportation data, the city logged 9.5 million scooter and bike-share rides in 2025, a record pace.

SEATTLE — Seattle’s booming scooter and bike-share use is creating new tensions on city sidewalks, with at least one business owner in a dense neighborhood saying scooters are increasingly blocking her storefront.

In the University District, longtime business owner Shiga said abandoned scooters routinely pile up outside her door.

“I pick it up and put them in a corner…They leave them all over the street,” Shiga said.
