PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger is in a race against time. Usually, public TV and radio stations across the country receive their annual financial grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in November. But after President Donald Trump signed a rescission bill in July, the $1.1 billion in federal funding that had been earmarked for public broadcasting in 2026 and 2027 was eliminated — forcing a scramble to fill that financial gap. That’s particularly urgent for smaller stations in rural markets that depended more on federal funds to remain in operation.
