Washington, Catholic clergy come to an agreement over mandatory reporting law

OLYMPIA, Wash. — The State of Washington and Catholic clergy members who sued over a recently passed mandatory reporting law have come to an agreement that may put the issue to rest.

Clergy members will remain mandatory reporters, but they will no longer be required to report information that they learn solely through confession, or its equivalent in other faiths.

A bill that was signed into state law during the last legislative session, SB 5375, required clergy members to report child abuse or neglect, no matter how they obtained that information, even if it was under the seal of the confessional.
