Washington police recruits step into virtual reality training pilot

Roughly 30 recruits at the Burien academy are taking part in the pilot program this fall. If approved, the technology could expand to all WA police training centers.

BURIEN, Wash. — Before Washington’s newest police recruits ever step onto the streets, they’re stepping into a virtual world.

Inside the state’s Criminal Justice Training Center in Burien, future officers are participating in a first-of-its-kind pilot program that uses virtual reality (VR) to prepare them for real-life encounters. 

The initiative, developed by Axon, the same company behind Tasers and police body cameras, aims to supplement traditional academy lectures with immersive, scenario-based learning.
