Researchers report over 16 million birds migrated over Washington in early October, highlighting the impact of light pollution on their journey.
SEATTLE — Millions of birds continue to silently fly overhead, making their long seasonal journey south. The autumn bird migration season is in full swing, peaking between September 19 and October 11 in western Washington, according to researchers at Purdue University’s AeroEco Lab.
On the nights of October 3 and October 4, more than 16 million birds flew across Washington state, according to real-time tracking data from BirdCast. Around 4.4 million of those passed through King County alone.
