Researchers urge ‘Lights Out’ as 12.3M birds to migrate over Washington state this weekend

Millions of birds will migrate over Washington state’s night sky, with peak activity expected in late September.

SEATTLE — Washington’s night sky will be filled with millions of migrating birds in the coming nights.

According to BirdCast data, on the night of September 18-19, over 6.4 million birds crossed Washington state, and around 1.3 million birds in King County alone.

During the spring and fall months, billions of birds migrate across the United States, mainly at night. In Washington state, the fall migration season typically peaks around late September to early October.
