Big Brothers Big Sisters of Island County to close after 26 years

OAK HARBOR, Wash. — Big Brothers Big Sisters of Island County will close at the end of September after 26 years of serving local youth, citing financial problems that began during the COVID-19 pandemic and have persisted through the current economy.

The closure affects an organization that has connected more than 10,000 children with mentors and enrichment programs throughout Island County. The organization says participants were significantly less likely to drink alcohol, use drugs, or skip school compared to their peers.
