Patient died of brain-eating amoeba in South Carolina, Columbia children’s hospital confirms

SC Dept. of Public Health confirmed the case of Naegleria fowleri was identified the week of July 7th but the agency hasn’t said where in the state it was found.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A Columbia area hospital is confirming a death of a patient from a brain-eating amoeba in South Carolina. 

On Wednesday, Prisma Health Richland Children’s Hospital in Columbia said a patient treated at their facility died from the organism. This announcement came a day after The South Carolina Department of Public Health (SCDPH) confirmed that there was a case of someone contracting the illness, but did not confirm a death.
