Firefighters from across Idaho fill shifts for grieving Coeur d’Alene fire crews

70 firefighters across Idaho covered shifts in Coeur d’Alene, allowing local firefighters to attend memorials for two fallen colleagues.

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — They say in the fire service, you’re never really off duty. That proved true this week when 70 firefighters from across Idaho responded to a call that didn’t originate from dispatch.

They packed their gear, left their families and cities, and drove hundreds of miles to work hours in an unfamiliar station so their colleagues in Coeur d’Alene could sit beside caskets instead of fire engines.
