Legislators say higher gas tax in Washington will fund key infrastructure projects

Legislators behind the six-cent increase blamed rising costs and declining gas tax revenue for the hike.

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Washington state’s gas tax increased Tuesday for the first time in nine years.

Commuters better get used to the increases.

”We were running out of money, and so we were going to have to delay things,” said Sen. Marko Liias, co-sponsor of Senate Bill 5801, which raised the gas tax Tuesday by six cents a gallon.
