ABERDEEN, Wash. — When the Washington state Supreme Court ruled the state’s simple drug possession law unconstitutional, nearly 4,000 inmates were released from custody.
Hundreds of thousands more convicted under the law, thrown out in 2021, qualified for refunds from the state for court fees, fines, bail, and impound charges.
But fewer than 2% of those eligible for claims have applied, according to the Washington Administrative Office of the Courts.
The office estimates approximately 350,000 people were charged with the crime between 1971
