Scammers impersonate federal agencies and banks, stealing millions from Washington residents

The scam tracked by prosecutors since early 2024 has resulted in more than $7 million in losses statewide.

SEATTLE — Dozens of Washington residents have lost thousands of dollars each to a sophisticated scam involving criminals impersonating federal agencies, according to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

The scam, which has been tracked by prosecutors since early 2024, has resulted in more than $7 million in losses statewide, said Patrick Hinds, the chief of King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office’s Economic Crimes and Wage Theft Division.

“These are significant losses of money, often to people who can’t afford to lose that money,” Hinds said.
