‘It’s heartless and cruel’: Senior reflects on free ride service’s uncertain future due to Trump budget cut

Island Senior Resources could lose 46% of its annual budget.

LANGLEY, Wash. — Whenever Randy Weers pulls up in his old Subaru, Rick Larson knows he’s in good hands.

Weers is a volunteer driver for Island Senior Resources. He makes sure Larson gets to his many medical appointments on time.

Larson is battling three different forms of cancer and an autoimmune disorder. 

His transportation options are very limited. His wife can’t drive because she has Parkinson’s disease. Their son passed away unexpectedly. Cabs and ride services like Lyft and Uber are expensive.
