Seattle’s Kshama Sawant is running for Congress

Sawant was first known as the driving force behind Seattle’s $15 minimum wage law back in 2014.

SEATTLE — Former Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant announced on Monday that she is running for Congress. 

She will challenge Rep. Adam Smith for his seat representing District 9 at the federal level. Smith has been in the District 9 seat since 1997.

Sawant served on the Seattle City Council for 10 years before giving up her seat in 2024 to launch a national labor movement called Workers Strike Back. She’s known for being the driving force behind Seattle’s $15 minimum wage back in 2014, her efforts
