Flags are at half-staff to honor fallen peace officers on Peace Officers Memorial Day.

SEATTLE — Flags will be at half-staff on Thursday in recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

Peace Officers Memorial Day is recognized across the United States and honors local, state and federal peace officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty.

The annual observance dates back to 1962. That was the year President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation declaring the observance and designated the week that followed as National Police Week.
