Deepfake of deceased man gives his own impact statement in court

The AI-generated deepfake of a deceased road rage victim gave his own impact statement in court at the sentencing hearing of the defendent, as reported by NBC News. This is likely the first time the technology has been used in this way.

The idea of using an AI version of the victim, Christopher Pelkey, came from his family, according to a Maricopa County Attorney’s Office spokesperson. Pelkey’s sister said she had been writing the impact statement for two years but found that what she had to say “did not seem like it would do justice” to his memory.
