Train trestle destroyed by fire along historic Washington state railroad

A fire destroyed a historic wooden train trestle in Washington under restoration near Morton.

MORTON, Wash. — A fire destroyed a wooden train trestle on a historic Washington railroad that was under construction. 

The trestle near Morton caught fire Wednesday night. It’s along a portion of railroad that was closed for restoration.

Bethan Maher, the executive director of Western Forest Industries Museum, said they were in Morton celebrating the purchase of the railroad when they got word of the fire. The nonprofit manages Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad, which offers scenic train rides.

“I don’t think we’ve processed it yet,” Maher told KING
