50 years ago her family escaped Vietnam by boat. Now she helps others start a new life

Van Dinh-Kuno is paying her American dream forward by helping refugees who have come after her.

EVERETT, Wash. — Van Dinh-Kuno remembers the fall of Saigon like a war movie in slow motion.

“You see the dead bodies laying on the street, in the gutter,” she said. “Soldiers asking people for civilian clothes so they won’t be killed by the North Vietnamese.”

Van was just 17 years old when North Vietnamese forces took the city, sending her family scrambling to escape.

“My father was desperate to get us out safely,” she said.
